After searching the internet I could not find the answer I was looking for. The problem I had was the default measurement in SSRS Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS) 2008 R2 was set to ‘cm’, every time I created a new report I would have to manually change the measurement type on each element I added to the report, in my case I prefer to use point. This is somewhat time consuming but allows for more accurate positioning.
I decided to contact Microsoft using their Microsoft Connect site where you can give feedback on their products, it took a 1 1/2 months for a reply which was that they would not be implementing this as a fix but there is a work around available. Well that was suitable enough for me!
So what you have to do is edit the report.rdl template, the one that is used what you add a new report to the solution ‘Add.. New Item.. Report.rdl’, Note this doesn’t work for the report wizard as it appears to be hard coded to use inches, which is fine for me as I haven’t used that in years!
To do this we first need to open the template in BIDS (it will open as an .xml file):
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies\ProjectItems\ReportProject\Report.rdl
Then within the Report element add the following tag:
Save and close, and that’s all there is to it, a very simple and effective workaround! Though you would expect to be able to change this in the Options menu!!
